What does engine lamp mean on Toyota Corolla?

When the dashboard "engine" lamp lights up in most cars it can mean any one of a number of things. Different makes, models and varients use different systems to diagnose faults in the engine.

Consult the owners handbook for a detailed description of your particular model / varient.

Some of the more common reasons the lamp would light are as follows:

• Oil pressure (not temperature) in crankcase is too high or too low
• Engine has passed its pre-programmed service interval (See **, below)
• Engine has surpassed its life expectancy (See *, below)
• An engine management system is At Fault or requires recalibration
• A sensor has been damaged and / or is not working properly, or isn't properly connected (a loose wire, perhaps)
• Other electronic systems such as key recognition or alarm / immobilizer are damaged / require recalibration
• Explosive seatbelt pretensioners are faulty
• Clutch is nearing its wear limit / clutch fluid is low
• Electronic ignition timing is incorrectly set
• Thermostat is not functioning properly

*Some cars have pre-defined "life" cycles. When the cycle ends the light comes on, even though the car may be perfectly useable. I have known many people to simply disconnect the light, having rebuilt the cars' engine and found nothing wrong with it!

**Sometimes it is necessary to recalibrate certain electronic systems. This should be done by a trained technician. Most often, these service intervals are mileage specific, but in some newer cars they can be age-related.
