Equal opportunity means that the chance for employment, promotion, raises, are the same for all who want to try for them. Prejudicial criteria are not present for any reason.
Imagine you had a "prize" of some sort - job, award or position - that you wanted to give away. Competitors for the prize were presented to you in plain metal boxes with a screen and keyboard. You could ask the competitors any question you wanted by typing it in, and their answer would appear on the screen. The only limitation was the questions had to relate to their worthiness of getting the prize - so no "are you Chinese, male, over twenty, skinny, straight, Buddhist, German, etc." questions.
At the end of the day you would have to choose the winner based on these fair questions.
Each competitor in the boxes would have had an equal opportunity to win.
