Estás {verb)(accent over the A) means "you are" (informal). Eres also means "You are" (Informal).
Estás (estar) implies something temporary "Estas enfermo" = You are sick
Eres (ser) implies permanence. Eres enfermo = You are (mentally) ill.
There are key exceptions but even these exceptions make sense when coupled with the culture. Estas muerto. "You are dead" seem as permanent as you can get. But in the culture that deeply believes in an afterlife, you will be resurrected so it is temporary. "Eres casado" "You are married" you can get divorced so it's not permanent, right?
