Not slang at all. Different countries and different manufacturers have different terms for things but gearbox is literally a box (casting) full of gears and dates back to the first mechanically propelled variable speed machines using gears and/or chains.
Transmission is the umbrella term for the train of devices that transmits power from the engine through to the wheels. where these are close coupled into a single unit the device is normally considered a transaxle assembly.

The gearbox warning light on a transit indicates that the gearbox is having an issue and needs to be checked. The Vehicles computer has stored the information that set the light off so that you can see what the problem seems to be.
