Example: "The news show's ratings were steadily dropping, so we gave the anchorman the axe. The audience seems to enjoy the new anchor." It can also be a mispronunciation of "ask." Example: "I want to axe you a question."
I just saw the film today and I noticed her axe very closely resembles the M48 tomahawk that they sell all over ebay and amazon. The film makers took the creative liberties of enlarging the size from a tomahawk to a larger axe and giving the axe head some more reinforced metal down the shaft. So far the M48 tomahawk is the closest thing you can get to Johanna's axe though I hope that they start making the larger axe version just like the one from the film!
