Hallucinations means seeing, hearing or (very occasionally) feeling things that seem real, but that do not in fact happen. It is not unusual for people to have them occasionally -- that conviction that you saw something out of the corner of your eye is often a visual hallucination, and most of us have been sure we heard someone speak to us or call our name, then discovered that it had not happened. When hallucinations are frequent they can be indicators of problems that need to be addressed. Possible causes are drug reactions, minor brain damage, tumors, and possibly the onset of major disorders such as schizophrenia. If you are having them often enough to worry you, they should be checked out by a physician. In reference to your original question, they have no meaning outside the person's own mind.

It's when you think something is happening or someone is there that isn't.

It is the experience which involves the perception of something that is not existing.
