Tubman often said something to this effect to fugitive slaves who were having second thoughts, maybe turning back to the plantation. She was basically saying, "Unacceptable. You're going to either make it to freedom with me or die right here today, because I'm not letting you comprimise this escape mission or the Underground Railroad". Fugitive slaves returning to their owners were viciously beaten - for both punishment and vital information that could endanger fellow slaves on the run.
