Heriot-Watt University is a leading UK university for business and industry with teaching and pioneering research.

Heriot was the right of a lord in feudal Europe to take a serf's best horse and clothing when he died. This was because earlier it was a tradition of the lord to loan a serf a horse and/or armour & weapons. So the equipment were originally owned by the lord and he was just getting back what he had loaned.

There is also a catering service named Heriot Catering in the UK.

Also James Herriot was the pen name of James Alfred Wight, a British veterinary surgeon and writer.
