Hermatypic corals are those corals that secrete a calcium carbonate skeleton and contribute to the building of reefs.

The tissues of these corals contain a symbiotic alga called zooxanthellae. These algae are able to use sunlight to create their own food, and thus give some of this food to the coral. The corals themselves are able to catch and eat both phytoplankton (microscopic plant-like plankton) and zooplankton (microscopic animal plankton) with their tentacles.
