Once the rocks fracture the petroleum and/or natural gas will concentrate in the fractures, making them easier to pump out (usually via the same wells as originally used to inject the fluids) than when they were stuck in the solid rock.
While usually harmless, the fracturing can be very unpredictable and in some cases has caused problems like: contamination of drinking water aquifers, unexpected surface venting, tremors, etc.
