Which brakes are you replacing front or rear or all four It shouldn't cost more than $100 with out parts and labor Or you can do them your self it's not that hard at all unless your are doing the rear brakes which will require a special brake spring tool

If you are referring to the electric engine radiator fan, there should a safety recall for a free replacement or repair. I had one done on my 1995 Mercury Sable. But I don't know if the recall goes back that far to 1988. Go to the Federal Government's National Highway Safety web page to see.

I would suggest you look in either a Chilton or Haynes manual for the proper steps to take to replace your car's rear brakes. There you will find instructions as well as illustrations that will help to get a proper job.
