Since mermaids are mythical, meaning not real, we would really need to ask another mythical sea creature, like Moby Dick. I would imagine, though, we could also consult any number of fish with long tail fins... they look quite graceful and knowledgeable about their long tails. And, if you don't know any fish to ask, I think perhaps you could ask a dog or cat, since they also have long tails they can flip back and forth with grace and ease. In fact, a dog or cat might be able to say even better how a tail might feel if on a human.
