An active volcano is one which periodically erupts, spewing forth lava, and assorted gases.

A dormant volcano is one which has stopped erupting and may not erupt again for a long time, although we can't say exactly how long.

An extinct volcano is one which will never erupt again. There is no more hot magma inside it, it has all cooled down and is now solid rock.

What does active dormant extinct mean?

Active - a volcano that is still "alive" with the chance of erupting Dormant - "asleep" or "dead" for many years; hasn't erupted for a while - Opposite of active Extinct - same thing as dormant, but no chance of erruption

What is the difference between an extinct and a dormant earthquake?

An earthquake is a result of movement along a fault line, so they aren't classified as extinct and dormant. If you mean volcanoes, an extinct volcano is one that scientists classify as unlikely to erupt again because it no longer has lava supply. A dormant volcano is one scientists believe can still be active but has not had an eruption in recent years.

What do the words dormant volcano mean?

it means the volcanoes are not active

What is dourman volcano?

i think you mean "doormant". A dormant volcano is one that isn't currently active or erupting, but geologists think that it's still capable of erupting.

Volcanoes that are quiet are what kind of volcanoes?

Quiet volcanoes can be either dormant or extinct. An extinct volcano, as you may have guessed, has not erupted for a very long period of time and will not erupt in the future. A dormant volcano, however, is just sleeping. You probably get up all groggy after a good sleep. If you mean volcanoes that erupt quietly, as in not explosively, then those are generally shield volcanoes.

What does dormant mean when used to refer to a volcano?

Sleeping

What does dormant mean?

Literally: sleepingIn geological terms, dormant means a volcano that is currently not erupting but is not extinct. In terms of flora, many trees lie dormant during winter, i.e. not growing, just like seeds remain dormant until they are given the stimulus to grow (soil, water, sunlight). In medical terms, a dormant virus is one that is not actively attacking the host's system, but it is present in their physiology.A dormant volcano is an active volcano that is not erupting at present but has the possibility to erupt again. An example of a dormant volcano is Mauna Kea in Hawaii.when a seed begains to grow

What does it mean if volcano is active?

you can get active, dormant (or sleeping) and inactive volcanoes. an active volcano is one that is very likely to erupt in the future and still has magma in it. a dormant (or sleeping) volcano is one that has not erupted for the past thousand-or-so years, but can still erupt an inactive volcano is highly unlikely to ever erupt again. every volcano will eventually become inactive. at one time, there were volcano in the UK, but they have all died out now (or become inactive) !!

Does dormant mean a volcano that is actively erupting?

No. It means that there is no known activity in the volcano from what volcanoligists can find out.

What does dormant mean in a volcano's life?

It is hard to distinguish between a dormant and extinct volcano, but it will be considered dormant if it has not showed signs of eruption over several spans of its recharge period. For example, a volcano that has been known to erupt every twenty years might be considered dormant if it goes sixty years without erupting. Signs that a volcano might be dormant and is not nearing an eruption include: -Does not produce smoke or sulfuric smell from vents or crater -Lava cannot be viewed in or near the volcano, or can only be found very deep inside the crater -No tremors or small earthquakes have been detected in the area around the volcano for a long period of time -Small plants and trees have grown naturally on the cone. (More plant life than moss or lichen)
