It means that for saving your dignity, leave him and find someone who likes you. This is a golden advise: take the one who loves you, and don't take the one whom you love.
This is true but you should tell him how you feel. Telling you he likes another girl could just be a cover could just mean he likes you. Guys are humans as well. Sometimes they will use covers because they're afraid that the girl may not like them. So tell him your feelings. Even if he doesn't like you, at least he'll know he's acting like a jerk.
