BP stands for blood pressure. Blood pressure measures the force in a person's arteries when the heart beats (systolic) and the force in the arteries when at rest (diastolic). High blood pressure is also known as hypertension. In an adult, a bp less than or equal to 140 systolic/90 diastolic, is called high blood pressure. Blood Pressure Category Systolic

(mm Hg) Diastolic

(mm Hg) Normal less than 120 and less than 80 Prehypertension 120-139 or 80-89 High Stage 1 140-159 or 90-99 Stage 2 160 or higher or 100 or higher Information and table from http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=2112
