Getting a hamster is a great thing to do to teach responsibility to a younger generation, aswell as them being very cute and cuddly. It is a false statement that hamsters sleep all day, as they do come out about 2/3 times a day for food and drink. While they sleep, it gives you time to do everything you need or want to do, and you can enjoy playing with your hamster in the evening and early morning. =]
