your ac compressor could be seizing up. happened on my 2003 suburban.
The ac compressor is probably seized up or seizing up. Don't run the ac any more until the system is repaired. If the compressor fills the system with trash (if it hasn't already) the cost for repair will be very high.
The engine management system may not be adjusting for the extra load of the A/C. Can also be the A/C compressor is seizing up. Have this looked at by a professional.

A seized AC compressor will tear up the belt... if it's a serpentine belt, or a belt which runs any other components necessary to the car's operation, that'll eventually cause it to shut down.
AC compressor is locked up.
An AC belt hooks up to an 1987 Nova by wrapping around the AC compressor. It is then reattached to the compressor by tightening the bolts back down to the belt.
Many cars can have the ac compressor bypassed. Buying a belt for the same model vehicle without ac should be the correct length for a replacement.
DO NOT FEAR THIS !!! The ac comes on with the defrost: because do you ever use your ac in the winter? me neither. Manufactures have made the ac come on with the defrost to prevent the ac compressor from seizing up. Since we never use them in winter, at least in cold climates. Cheers and drive on.
