The Persian War was 499-449 BCE. It comprised several phases, not the erroneous idea peddled by some today. It began with the Ionian Revolt in western Asia Minor 499-493 BCE. This was followed by the Persian punitive expedition against Eretria and Athens 490 BCE. Then followed the invasion of mainland Greece 480-479 BCE. Then followed sporadic battles with the Delian League 478-450 BCE. It was endedby the Peace of Callias 449 BCE. Where in this are the First, Second etc Persian Wars?

Greek civilization is divided into eight periods. First, the Neolithic period lasted from 6000- 2900 BCE. It was followed by the Early Bronze Age which lasted from 2900- 2000 BCE. Then came the Minoan age from 2000- 1400 BCE. Then in 600 BCE, the Mycenaean Age began and it lasted until 1100 BCE, when the Dark Ages started. The Dark Ages ended in 750 BCE with the beginning of the Archaic Period. The Archaic Period was followed by the Classical Period, which began in 500 BCE. And lastly, the Hellenistic period which began in 336 BCE and ended in 146 BC with the dawning of the Roman Empire.

The fighting was continuous for fifty years. The first phase was the Ionian Revolt which was put down 499-493 BCE. Then followed the punitive expedition against Eretria and Athens for their interference in the Ionian Revolt 491-490 BCE. Then came the invasion of mainland Greece 480-479 BCE. Then followed the liberation of Ionia from Persian rule and its protection 478-450 BCE. And peace made 449 BCE.
