It's probably just a scrape/scab from sticking his/her nose into something it shouldn't be ;)
Then again, diagnosing things like dermatological issues can be nearly impossible without hands-on, face-to-face veterinary experience. I always recommend erroring on the safe side and taking your dog to the vet. If this is not feasible or you just will not listen to someone on the interent, at minimum keep a close eye on it several times a day and see if it is healing up over time or getting bigger/staying the same size! If it does grow or not heal in a reasonable period of time, then take them to the vet.
Try to keep him/her from "messing with it" if you can. It could possibly even be a parasite like ringworm or red mange both of which are contagious to humans. Although your description sounds like it might just be a scratch.
