If he is very old-fashioned or formal, he may wish to see if they approve of him before asking you out.
If you are very young, he may wish to explain his intentions and ask permission to ask you out.
Or, perhaps he has heard something about your parents that gives him concern. Perhaps he has heard they are (creepy / scary / rich / fanatics / whatever).
