According to my uncle, during WW2 this started veterans against Gen. Patton. It is considered the ultimate insult a person can give a President down. What a person is saying is, "I just hit you in the face with a bag of S--t." Few really know the meaning, but a lot of veterans know the meaning and over time it has slowly carried over.
