Generally, with that smell- the heater core has gone bad.
The fumes are most likely coming from an exhaust leak. The leak could be at the converter, or somewhere else in the exhaust system.

nevermind, got it fixed. It was a corroded fuel line.

the wind is hitting the sea and the fumes are coming off it

the crankcase fumes are noxious and contain hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide its better to put them back in the engine then coming back into car through vents. you don't want to breath dangerous fumes risking asphyxiation
