A hermit is a person that keeps to themselves and does not live with others. They tend to be loners. The Hermit Crab is named that way because they live alone in a shell that was not theirs to begin with. They find an empty shell and move in. Kind of lika a squatter who moves into an abandoned house away from others.

Could have been close to molting or did molt. My Hermit crabs bury themselves all the time under the sand and substrate. I think its to keep themselves warm and also to hide themselves even further. When my Hermit, buster, shed his skin and molted he buried himself for days under the sand. If you notice a skin like substance in your tank you can officially say they shed their skin. Keep the skin in their because they eat it.

It means they are getting bigger or they are freshly molted. Your crab should go near a slightly bigger shell, and move to that shell. Shells are their homes. Your hermit crabs shouldent leave from their shells, unless they are moving. Dont force them to get out or it could cause serious damage. Hope this will help.

There are a couple different reasons for this. One is maybe to get cooler. But most likely it is because they are getting ready to molt. That is when they shed their skin, and get new skin and maybe grow a bit bigger. Whatever you do, do NOT dig up your hermit crab!

They leave from their shell once in awhile, because they are getting bigger or they have freshly molted, and need a new home. The crab will go in a slightly bigger shell. Hermit crabs dont leave their shells. they are always in them unless they move shells.

So that they can molt in peace. Their life consists of eating "normal food", sleeping, crawling, burrowing, molting, eating "old dead skin", eating "normal food", sleeping, crawling, burrowing, molting, eating "old dead skin".....repeat over & over & over.

If their human adds a saltwater aquarium, then they will lay eggs somewhere in that sequence.

Otherwise it remains the same life cycle.

What does it mean if your hermit crab come out of its shell and won't go back in?

Hermit crabs are nocturnal, so it sounds like your hermit must have gone to sleep. Mine has slept for a week, once! If you get home and you find your hermit crab out of it's shell and looking see-through, then it has molted. Hermits usually molt on their 'birthday' but stay in their shells a while prior to molting.
