It doesn't have a name for the experience but I know exactly how you feel, a it has happened to me once before with my Grandfather. I called him Papaw, I miss him very much.
Anyways I know many things about the paranormal that many people come to me for the answers to, but I don't talk to ghosts or anything.
This is nothing to be scared of since it is your Grandfather, but if you wake up crying because you miss him and the image of him is shocking, I know what you mean.
My story was when my Papaw had recently just passed a few months earlier and I had unusually fallen asleep really easy, and I hadn't been thinking about him at all. I was expecting a normal night. In my dream it looked like I was in my fenced in backyard back when I lived in Texas. It was a creamy white, it looked like all of the colors have faded. I was dressed in a white gown, and I looked around with a confused look on my face and found my Papaw dressed in a white shirt with tan pants on, and it made me smile to see is white Go-T beard. I ran crying frantically to run and hug him. I was bawling with my arms wrapped around his big belly, and he was smiling with his head resting on top of my brown hair. We stood there for a while and I had calmed down and he faded away, for some reason I wasn't sad, I was but I knew he would be happier now. It only seemed like a few hours, but after that I woke up and started to cry, but that day I went to school got home cried in the shower a little bit and then woke up the next day feeling fine only a little depressed. But it was so amazing because it felt so real, I even remember feeling the white shirt on his back.
Well then lets get to the point. If a loved one has passed away and is about to cross over to heaven, the only way they can find a way to see you before they leave their place on Earth is to visit their loved one in their Dreams from the "dream world".
