Blood pressure is measured to determine the pressure your arteries are having on your blood flow. Think of your arteries like a straw; if the straw is wide open fluid can freely move throughout the straw. This would result in a normal blood pressure typically anything under 120/80 is ideal. This is due to the fact that the heart doesn't have to do any additional work to force the blood through the artery.

Now if the straw has food or plaque adhered to the inside that's creating an obstruction blocking blood flow. This means your heart has to do a lot more work to pump through that straw. This causes the heart muscle to thicken and enlarge which results in the heart becoming weaker over time.

Persistent hypertension is one of the risk factors for strokes, heart attacks, heart failure and arterial aneurysms, and is the leading cause of chronic renal failure. Typically diet changes and exercise are first line therapies but your doctor will understand your condition and what's best for you.

What is meant by the term blood pressure and to know what causes changes to it?

The heart pumps around the body to supply it with oxygen and nutrients as well as to remove waste products such as carbon dioxide and urea. The heart pumps the blood around the body under pressure- this is measured at 2 points. The pressure when the heart is contracting- the systolic pressure and the pressure when it is resting- the diastolic pressure. Too high blood pressure can cause health problems such as a stroke (cerebral haemorrhage) or heart attack (cardiac arrest).
