You probably over-filled your gas tank and the smell is the excess coming out the vent. Or, you could have a leak/rip/tear in a gas line somewhere, in which case you're driving a bomb on wheels that could blow at any moment. Don't smoke near the car and take it in to a mechanic if the smell doesn't go away after a couple days of driving.
