It's really open for your own interpreation. There's a difference in your dreams when it's just a pile of crazy and things really never make any sense, but you'll notice when you're having a visitation from someone who you knew, the dream makes perfect sense. Nothing is jarbeled or weird. The colours are usually vibrant and beautiful and they (your loved one) look exactlly how you remember them when they looked their best. It's almost as though you just saw them not that long ago, and they were just away somewhere for a short visit and they popped in to say hello. Sometimes you might never even think in your head in your dream that they're dead. It'll just be like 'old times'. Sometimes you might realize you're dreaming and you can interact with them but only briefly. In those cases, usually your loved one keeps the visits short because it can be quite emotional, especially if you know they're going to be leaving you again within moments. They can be quite curt and short in this case. You'll never be left feeling short handed when that happens though. Things need to be that way, and you understand that that's the way it is without questioning it. ie: 'This is just the way it is. I'll see you again soon and I'm never far from your side, I love you but you need to move on with your life and be happy.' People who we care about who've died, come to visit us in our dreams to reassure us they're all right. They'll visit us if they feel we need to be comforted to know that they're OK wherever they are. You usually might notice that their lips aren't moving and you can understand what they're saying telepathically. These dreams can never be forced or prayed for. They happen they happen. You'll usually feel quite emotional after these 'visits'. And yes, they are visits. You'll know the difference between a visitation and just a normal dream.

Perhaps you feel this friend was far away from you. Reasons for your dream could be,

  • if friend died of natural causes you could recently have felt a sense of loss.
  • if friend was killed, you are either feeling a sense of hatred to that frined or someone close to you.

sometimes we don't understand why we have these dreams , :)

I suppose that depends on if you are spiritual or not. If so, then maybe that friend is seeking to comfort you as you make your way through life. If they are recently deceased, maybe you are seeking to comfort them. You are friends, after all.

Then there's the psychological or more scientific viewpoint. It means you're whacked.

Just kidding. Your dreams are always recreations of places you've been or ideas you've been presented with. If you're hanging out with a dead friend, just chatting like everything is normal, it's probably because that's something that your unconscious mind is used to. Anyone you would consider a friend would be important to you & therefore you'll likely dream of that person long after their departure. Maybe you just miss them & so you created a dream where you are together again. It is your brain after all.

Like all dreams though, sometimes these can be unpleasant. In that case, the dream is likely a reflection of some unconscious fear of yours you'll have to translate on your own, being the dreamer. Alot of times dreams are just visual metaphors for stuff that's really going on in your life or heart. Alot of scientists think this is an instinctual development we've accquired over time. Sort of an early warning system. I know I myself have found lost items thanks to my dreams.

You have been thinking about that person recently. Dreams do not "mean" anything. They are random neuron firings at at time of the sleep cycle that happen to allow individuals to remember the patterns of neurons that fired just then.

A different response:

Such dreams are very common during the period of grief and mourning after a loved one's death. They represent the mind's struggle to accept the reality and finality of the loved one's absence. Even long after the death, the love and connections one feels for the deceased can continue. This reality is witnessed by all of the world's religions and faith traditions. The separation of death does not destroy bonds of love and compassion, or negate the possibility of expressions of support.

Dreams of the deceased are a normal part of the grieving process. The subconscious mind might struggle to accept the finality of the friend's absence, and try to bring that person back through dreams. Also, the dreamer's sleeping mind could use the image of the deceased friend to represent something or someone entirely different, yet with qualities similar to the dead friend. For example, if the dream is about the friend's studious habits, the subconscious mind could be alerting the dreamer that one's own studies need more attention.

If the death of this friend is relatively recent, then dreams are part of the natural process of mourning. The dreams help your subconscious mind to accept the reality and finality of your loss. If the dream has additional significance, it may lie in the emotions you experienced during the dream, in what your friend did or said during the dream, where you were in the dream and other factors that could be subtle yet important.

After reading the description of the dream on the Discussion page, it is evident that this dream is deeply meaningful to the dreamer. It suggests a journey to a place between the worlds - between the realms of living and dead - where words left unsaid can finally be spoken. From a psychological viewpoint, this is a way in which the subconscious mind can complete the mourning process and accept the reality of the friend's absence.
