That's called the "click of death". It happens to mechanical hard drives that contains a rotating platter inside and data stored on those platters are then Read/write by a arm/actuator that over time gets weaken. This makes a clicking sound when the arm tries to read or write data from or to the drive. It will start with one or two clicks which is a warning that the device will fail soon. when you notice this sounds it's better to get yourself a new HDD and clone the old drive to it. An SSD drive is more reliable for this reason because it doesn't contain any moving parts.
