I don't have a 2001 Montero Sport, but I just recently bought a 1998 Montero Sport and it had this problem while I test drove it over night. I told them to fix it before I would buy it and they did. It was some problem with the actuator or whatever engages the transfer case, they had to replace that part, and fix something in the brake system in the engine compartment. It took about 1-2 weeks to fix and a $1000 or so (out of their pocket of course). The basic problem was that the transfer case had trouble staying enagaged and when it did, it knocked out the ABS system. If you do have it fixed though, be sure to check your brake connections in the engine compartment, as they hadn't tightened down a connection enough and I had been losing brake fluid. Sorry, to answer your question, it most likely means a repair to your transfer case components and your brake distributor block in the engine compartment Sorry, if I got any terms wrong!

Why does four wheel drive light flash?
Either a leak or depending on how much u drive
If it is flashing, then your vehicle is still in 4 wheel drive. It will drive just fine, the only thing you will notice, is on pavement turning the wheel at slow speeds it will feel like its lobbing in the front end, this is because the front wheels are turning. Bring to Mitsubishi garage and they can tell you if the indicator switch is bad ot an indicator switch.
