It could just mean he really values you as a friend. Some men are really close to other men as friends, and they depend on those friendships for moral support. It's no different with some of their women friends.
You have to make a judgment call based on how well you know this person and how close you are, as to whether or not he was trying to hint at any romantic feelings.
