He may have relapsed into taking the drugs. He may be going through withdrawal which has made him panic. Either way, you should ask him to talk to you quietly and say that you need a couple of days away while he completely cleans out his system, and that you will return when he is back to normal. If he has joined a group, talk to the people there about what else you can do to help.
