Though I have never experienced a dust storm in Australia, I have encountered a few minor dust storms in the Texas panhandle. They have a very distinctive smell. It's hard to explain, but if I had to define it, it would be musty.
A thunderstorm can smell like ozone, which has a sharp, metallic scent often described as clean or fresh. This smell is caused by lightning splitting oxygen molecules in the air and creating ozone. Additionally, rain falling on dry soil can release a "petrichor" smell, a pleasant earthy scent.

Based on the accounts of Reed Timmer, a storm chaser, a tornado often smells like a mix of rain and fresh cut wood. Generally speaking though, if you can smell the tornado you're probably too close.
