Klonopin (clonazepam) is a benzodiazepine anxiolytic (a medication that is designed to reduce symptoms of anxiety). A "five-panel" drug screen will likely fail to detect Klonopin. A "ten-panel" or a more comprehensive drug screen, however, will likely detect clonazepam as a "Benzodiazepine" (abbreviated BZD). Other benzodiazepines (often called "Benzos") include Ativan, Xanax, and Valium.

If a person "pops positive" for benzodiazepines on a drug screen, but has not been taking a benzodiazepine, authorizes (or is involuntarily subjected) to a confirmatory test, it will become clear which benzodiazepine has been detected, if any.

If the donor of the sample has a legitimate prescription for the agent identified, he/she should be classified as having a "negative" drug test. If not, he/she may be classified as having used illicit benzodiazepines.
