Kurma is the second form or avatar of Vishnu, the preserver god. He is a turtle form and he represents Good luck and well being. He sometimes bears the swastica. He is associated with the churning of the cosmic ocean. In this story the gods and asuras cooperated to obtain the elixir of immortality by churning. The serpent Vasuki offered himself as a rope, and Mount Mandara was torn up to be used as a churning stick. A firm foundation was required, so Vishnu turned into a tortoise and supported the stick on his back.
