Something to eat, found on the ground daily.

AnswerThe people of ancient Israel were never satisfied, they were always complaining about something. After their exodus from Egypt they complained they didn't have any bread, so God miraculously provided a type of bread-like grain on the ground that looked like coriander seed which tasted sweet as honey which they had to collect daily. They didn't know what it was, so they called it "manna" from the Hebrew מָןword (man) and described it in Hebrew as "like seed of coriander, white, its taste was...."

Exod 16:13-15, 31 (KJV)

Exod 16 (v.13) And it came to pass, that...in the morning the dew lay round about the host. Exod 16 (v.14) And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground. (v.15) And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another,"It is manna": for they wist not [that is, 'didn't know'] what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat. ....... (v.31) And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna: and it was like coriander seed, white; and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey.

They ate it for the next 40 years.

(Exodus 16:31-35)31 And the house of Israel began to call its name "manna." And it was white like coriander seed, and its taste was like that of flat cakes with honey. 32 Then Moses said: "This is the word that Jehovah has commanded, 'Fill an omer measure of it as something to be kept throughout YOUR generations, in order that they may see the bread that I made YOU eat in the wilderness when I was bringing YOU out of the land of Egypt.'" 33 So Moses said to Aaron: "Take a jar and put in it an omerful of manna and deposit it before Jehovah as something to be kept throughout YOUR generations." 34 Just as Jehovah had commanded Moses, Aaron proceeded to deposit it before the Testimony as something to be kept. 35 And the sons of Israel ate the manna forty years, until their coming to a land inhabited. The manna was what they ate until their coming to the frontier of the land of Ca′naan.

(Numbers 11:4-9)4 And the mixed crowd that was in the midst of them expressed selfish longing, and the sons of Israel too began to weep again and say: "Who will give us meat to eat? 5 How we remember the fish that we used to eat in Egypt for nothing, the cucumbers and the watermelons and the leeks and the onions and the garlic! 6 But now our soul is dried away. Our eyes are on nothing at all except the manna." 7 Incidentally, the manna was like coriander seed, and its look was like the look of bdellium gum. 8 The people spread out and picked it up and ground it in hand mills or pounded it in a mortar, and they boiled it in cooking pots or made it into round cakes, and its taste proved to be like the taste of an oiled sweet cake. 9 And when the dew descended upon the camp by night, the manna would descend upon it.

(Deuteronomy 8:3)3 So he humbled you and let you go hungry and fed you with the manna, which neither you had known nor your fathers had known; in order to make you know that not by bread alone does man live but by every expression of Jehovah's mouth does man live.

(Deuteronomy 8:16)16 who fed you with manna in the wilderness, which your fathers had not known, in order to humble you and in order to put you to the test so as to do you good in your afterdays;

(Joshua 5:12)12 Then themanna ceased on the following day when they had eaten some of the yield of the land, and manna did not occur anymore for the sons of Israel, and they began to eat some of the produce of the land of Ca′naan in that year.

(Nehemiah 9:20)20 And your good spirit you gave to make them prudent, and your manna you did not hold back from their mouth, and water you gave them for their thirst.

(Psalm 78:24) 24 And he kept raining upon them manna to eat, And the grain of heaven he gave to them.

(John 6:31) 31 Our forefathers ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written, 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'"

(John 6:49) 49 YOUR forefathers ate the manna in the wilderness and yet died.

(Hebrews 9:4)4 This had a golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid all around with gold, in which were the golden jar having the manna and the rod of Aaron that budded and the tablets of the covenant;

(Revelation 2:17)17 "'Let the one who has an ear hear what the spirit says to the congregations: To him that conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white pebble, and upon the pebble a new name written which no one knows except the one receiving it.'

The word "manna" occurrs in 17 verses of the KJV bible. The first mention is in Exodus 16:15. The previous verse, Exodus 16:14 says "upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing," but does not directly state that it fell from heaven. Some scholars beleive that God turned the "hoar frost on the ground" into mana, instead of letting the substance fall from heaven.

It was an edible substance which God provided for the Israelites during their travels in the desert during the 40-year period following the Exodus and prior to the conquest of Canaan. --Wikipedia

Psalm 78:25

"Man ate the food of the mighty ones. 1 He sent them more than enough to eat." 2

1 Because of the reference to “heaven” in the preceding verse, it is likely that mighty ones refers here to the angels of heaven. The LXX translates “angels” here, as do a number of modern translations (NEB, NIV, NRSV). --bible.org

The KJV (the King James Version) has "Man did eat angels food."

2 Heb: “provision he sent to them to satisfaction.”

"O Bread of life from Heaven, [Jesus]

O Food to pilgrims given,

O Manna from above:

Feed with the blessèd sweetness

Of Your divine completeness

The souls that want and need Your love."

-- Anonymous

"The Word of God is the 'bread of heaven' that God’s people must feed on daily if they’re going to succeed in their pilgrim journey (Matt 4:4). The way we treat His Word at the beginning of each day reveals whether or not we are yielded to Him and want to obey Him. To enter a new day without first feeding on the heavenly manna is to invite disappointment and defeat." --Wiersbe

Manna is reserved as the future food of the righteous (Revelation 2:17 -- "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.") -- [ISBE]

The Israelites were to gather the manna on 6 days, but not on the 7th day as it was God's gift to them, a Sabbath, or Day of Rest. Nevertheless, some of them went out anyway on the 7th day, but they found no food. God was mad. He said, "they [the people] must realize that the Sabbath is the Lord's gift" (Exodus 16:29). Likewise, God's gift to married couples is the gift of sex. But do we receive it gladly and not reject His gift? See 1 Corinthians 7:1-5. And if the Israelites further disobeyed God and tried to keep leftover manna from any one of the first 5 of the 6 days, it would go bad, "it bred maggots and stunk."

But on the 6th day, the Jews could set aside leftovers for the next day, the Sabbath. They did and it was without worms and odor. God still expects obedience, and if we find that we cannot obey always (Matthew 5:48; and Galatians 3:10, KJV: "For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them," then there is an answer!

What's this? " Rules and rituals given in the Law cannot save anyone. They can only condemn those who try to follow them.

everyone who tries to follow the law in order to be saved is always under the threat of being cursed by God. As Paul will go on to show, nobody is able to do everything the law says to do perfectly. Life under law, therefore, is life under God's curse."

--What does Galatians 3:10 mean? -

But Jesus was the only one who was perfect. So only He could volunteer to pay the penalty which our disobedience deserves. And He did. "Jesus Christ died as our substitute on the cross fulfilling the just demands of God’s Law (2 Cor 5:21)." -- Abide in Christ!

Second Corinthians 5:21 says, "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." I believed this, repented of my sins, and took Jesus as my Savior, and now look forward to going to Heaven one day. Jesus is waiting to hear from you, too. He is standing up there in Heaven waiting for you to call upon Him to give you His free gift of salvation, eternal life. He is waiting and watching. Do it today!

The manna that the Israelites ate in the wilderness were small, circular, unleavened wafers that tasted like honey. This is a reminder of the Promised Land which awaited.
