The tributaries are the Mat, Ta, Po and Ni Rivers. The Mat and Ta later form the Matta and the Po and Ni the Poni before they all come together to form the Mattaponi.

The main tribes living in the area were the Powhatan. Other tribes included the Cherokee, Chickahominy, Chesapeake, Nottoway, Pocomoke, and Shawnee. Right now there are 8 tribes in Virginia. The Mattaponi, The Upper Mattaponi, The Monacan, The Chickahomny, the Eastern Chickahomny, The Rappahanock, The Pamunkey and The Nsamond. My spelling might be off but those are the tribes in Virginia and of those tribes two have reservations, The Mattaponi and The Pamunkey.

the eastern woodland Indians live in Virginia- branch of the Algonquin nation. Tribes included Pamunkey, Mattaponi, and others.
They shared what is now called Virginia with other Algonguian speaking Native-Americans like the Pamunkey, Mattaponi and Chickahominy however their villages were generally close to the Chesapeake Bay. Southern and western Virginia was also the home of the Irioquois and the Sioux in the west.
Powhatan, Chickahominy, and Susquehanna Indians lived in present day Virginia. The state of Virginia borders the Atlantic Ocean. It is currently home to eleven federally recognized Native American nations. They are the Chickahominy, Eastern Chickahominy, Mattaponi, Upper Mataponi, Nansemond. Rappahannock, Monacan Indian Nation,Pamunkey. Cheroenhaka (Nottoway). Nottoway of Virginia, and Patowomeck.
In colonial times, the eastern United States was settled by groups of tribes that spoke some form of the Algonquian language. In the area that is now New England, there were the Abenaki, Massachusetts, Mohegan, Narragansett, Nipmuch, Passamaquoddy, Pennacook, Pequot, Pocumtuc, Tunxis, and Wampanoag tribes. In the mid-Atlantic area, there were the Lenape and bands of Pequot. Along the Chesapeake Bay and southeastern board, there were the Chickahominy, Nanticoke, Powhaton, and Wicocomico tribes.
No one knows what tribe Pocahontas belonged to. Nearly every Powhatan tribe has claimed to be the tribe of Pocahontas at one point or another. Currently, two tribes, the Mattaponi and the Patawomeck claim to be the tribe of Pocahontas through her mother. Numerous Powhatan tribes are now extinct and can no longer claim the honor. When the existing Powhatan tribes get together to write about their common history (example: We're Still Here: Contemporary Virginia Indians Tell Their Stories (2000, 2001, 2006) they never state which tribe is the tribe of Pocahontas's mother because they do not agree on this. The True Story of Pocahontas (which a previous poster here used as a source) has numerous errors and its authors have serious credibility issues. It should not be used as an authoritative source. Pocahontas may have been Mattaponi, but we'll never know.
