Each element has a different mass and size, therefore cannot be compared to each other in equal quantities with mass alone. In 1g of Carbon there will be a different number of particles than in 1g of Oxygen. The Avogadro's constant states how many particles there are in one mole of an element. By multiplying this constant with the relative Atomic Mass, the number of moles can be worked out, and this then used comparatively between elements.

answer 42 / 12 = 3.5 moles

If you have the molarity of solution, you can find the moles in a particular set volume by dividing molarity by 1000 and multiplying by the amount of millilitres of the solution that you have. If you have the weight, you divide this by the molecular mass. The weight has to be in grams. The molecular weight is calculated from the Periodic Table.

one mole in monatomic molecular elements. example noble gasses.

two moles in diatomic molecular elements. example hydrogen gas.

three moles in triatomic molecular elements. example ozone gas.

one mole in metals and other solids. examples copper, carbon, sulfur.

etc.

a mole of something is like a dozen of something, but many times more. a dozen is 12, a mole is roughly 6 * 1023.
