**Romans 5:12 says: "... through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin; and so death passed unto all men, for that all sinned"(ASV)(Genesis 2:16+17/ Genesis 3:17-19)

**Ezekiel 18:4 says: "...the soul that sinneth, it shall die"(KJB)(Psalm 146:4/Ecclesiastes 9:5+10)

**So, sin (disobedience to God), passed on from our first parents, causes our souls to die . (James 1:14+15)

To 'sin' means literally to 'miss', as in 'missing the mark' or 'not reaching a goal'...falling short of perfection. A 'sin' is anything that is out of harmony with God's personality and standards, and mars our relationship with our creator. Imperfection was passed to us from Adam, and as a consequence, for now, we die.

But this will not always be the case (John 3:16).

Answer:

The term "original sin" isn't in The Bible... which means the term originates with man.

Since the Dragon ["...that old Serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world..." - Rev.12:9] introduced man to sin's destructive nature in the Garden of Eden [Gen.3] -- sin has lost its "originality."

"...Sin is the transgression of the law." (I John 3:4)... and transgressing the law is man's nature. The Dragon merely brought it to the surface from within the first two innocent, inexperienced humans, that fateful day. Man's rebellious nature was awakened... and his children ran with it.

Ask the two-year old who curtly shouts "NO" to his mother and father's command. As the Lord told Cain:

"...sin lieth at the door..." (Gen.4:7). And that door easily swings open wide when man's nature is addressed.

"Because the carnal mind [the natural human mind] is enmity [hostile] against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." (Rom.8:7)

What [not-so-original] sin does to us is declared in the answer above. It ends in death. And, subsequently, the collective of all the "sinning" souls on earth has created for itself the wicked, dying world in which we all live.

Additional Answer:

The idea of 'Original Sin' is not found in Judaism. The doctrine was begun by Ireneaus in the 2nd Century AD and fully developed by the RC Church. The foundational ideas come from Paul's writings in Romans 5:12-21; 1 Corinthians 15:22. It basically states that humanity is in a state of sin since the deliberate sin of Adam and the fall of man.

The RCC teaches that all are born in a state of sin. However, if that is the case, then Christ the man, was too. Obviously this is not the case. Yes, sin entered the world in the Garden as Paul noted in Romans 5:12, but mankind has free will and chooses to do right or wrong - though we are told 'all have sinned and fallen short' - except Jesus Christ, the Savior of all mankind.

Catholic AnswerOriginal sin is the absence of supernatural life and the preternatural gifts which with God created human beings in the first place. Adam's sin was personal to himself and he lost original justice. So he had no original justice to pass on to his progeny, thus every single human being is born missing this and that is called original sin. So it doesn't do something, it is the absence of something. Our appetites are disordered and we are no longer inclined towards the Good. Without baptism, which restores supernatural life (although NOT the preternatural gifts) we have no life in us. Thus you could say that original sin deprives your soul of original justice, and of supernatural life.

Adam and Eve lived in paradise. They had everything God had to offer, but they sinned by disobedience and did what God had told them not to do.

Adam is the federal head of man and sin has passed from him down to every person that has been born since.

On the day they sinned, Adam and Eve died spiritually and so every person born since that time are born spiritually dead. This means that we are separated from God forever unless we are "born again". In the Gospel of John, Jesus tells us that "You must be born again" in order to enter the Kingdom of God (John 3:3-16).

This brings us to Jesus Christ. In order to redeem us back to God, Jesus came to earth born as a man in order to die for our sin. If we accept Him as our Savior believing that He died for our sin and was risen from the dead on the third day we can be reconciled back to God (this is the gospel in a nut shell).

Not only did all of mankind lose spiritual life on that day in the Garden, but because Eve first believed the serpent child birth to her and all women would be a painful experience, and the woman will be ruled by her husband (ruled but not abused) Adam because he listened to his wife, the earth would be cursed and bring forth thorns and thistles making it hard to grow food etc. Also humans became mortal and live for a short time before dying. In short the life that man has been living for thousands of years with all its pain, sorrow and woe has come about because of the original sin, but thankfully God has made a way of escape by sending His only Son Jesus Christ into the world. By accepting Him we can enter into the Kingdom of God and have the life that God intended for us at the beginning before the fall. The Holy Bible is the only authority and was given to man by God. Do not listen to man and his many theories, but read God's Word and get the complete truth. Man will only deceive you.

Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430) introduced the notion of original sin to the western half of the Christian Church, although it was never accepted in the Greek-speaking east and has been largely abandoned by many of the Protestant Churches. He said that original sin resulted directly from the disobedience of Adam and Eve, and believed that it could only be removed by baptism, so without baptism, souls could not go to heaven.

In more recent times, Christian Churches have modified their doctrine of original sin. Moreover, major denominations no longer regard Adam and Eve as literally the first two humans on earth, living just a few thousand years ago. Perhaps a little ahead of his Church's official position, Cardinal George Pell recently stated that the story of Adam and Eve is a myth, describing it as a religious story told for religious purposes. Without Adam and Eve, the doctrine of original sin will probably need to be abandoned or amended to remove reference to our mythical forbears.
