Roman Catholic AnswerA paten is a small saucerlike dish usually made of gold that holds the wafer(Host) to be consecrated for the priest. After the consecration, he elevates it with one hand, the chalice in the other, for the people to adore.

A paten is a small saucerlike disk of the same material as the Chalice. The paten holds the bread to be consecrated. There is also a version of the paten, which is larger and has a handle. It is not used as frequently as it used to be, but that one is held under a person's chin when they receive Holy Communion to catch the Host, should there be a mishap.

Is Protestant Catholic?

No.AnswerIf you mean 'catholic' with a small 'c', then yes. the word 'catholic' simply means 'universal' and so the Protestant Church is part of the universal Christian Church worldwide. If you mean 'Catholic' with a large 'C' - this usually refers to the Roman Catholic Church and, though the Protestant Church is part of the catholic (universal) church, it is not part of the Catholic (Roman Cattholic) church as this is a separate denomination.
