The battery is an electrical storage device.
When everything works properly, the engine turns the alternator, providing energy to that system.
The alternator turns that mechanical energy into electrical energy which is used to operate all of the electrical equipment on the vehicle while the engine is running. The alternator also provides electrical energy to the battery, allowing the battery to store the electrical energy for NEXT time you want to start the engine.
The starter requires a large amount of electrical energy, which most automotive batteries are capable of providing.
After the battery does it's job, providing energy to the starting system, the alternator then takes over, recharging the battery and providing the energy necessary to run everything... but it's all like that ONLY when everything works properly.
