His quadraphonic sound system was the envy of all his mates.
Quadraphonic systems used 4 speakers and reproduce music mixed with 4 independent channels. Unlike surround sound, Quadraphonic systems do not have a separate subwoofer channel, nor do they have a front center channel. They reproduced music from Quadraphonic 8-track cartridges, Reel-to-reel players and phonograph players which were made for the purpose.

Quadraphonic receivers have 4 speaker outputs. Connect 4 speakers of the same models to this. Connect your Quadrophonic turntable or reel-to-reel tape deck to the inputs on the receiver. Note that Quadraphonic systems haven't been sold since the 70's. Modern systems use encoded Dolby Digital or DTS digital audio to make sound with 5 to 7 channels. Main speakers should be equally spaced from your seating, facing you, the other two speakers located at the rear corners of the room.

Quadraphonic sound represented the first large scale attempts to bring surround sound to homes. It was a natural progression from stereo audio systems but doomed to failure. In the 1970s a number of manufacturers began to produce 4 channel sound systems and the BBC even began experimental 4 channel radio broadcasts. Apart from the high cost, there were two reasons why it never gained popularity. First, all audio sources at the time were 2 channel analog and all tuned to handle audio frequencies. It was challenging to squeeze additional information into the sources and there was no consensus on the methods used. The result was a mix of incompatible sources and processors. Even the best attempts at quadraphonic were of limited quality and the audiophiles who were expected to drive the market were not inspired by it and remained firmly committed to stereo. The latest surround sound systems are digital and enjoy far higher higher bandwidth to handle the additional channels. Agreement on multi-channel encoding presented the public with easy choice for surround sound purchases but it is interesting to note that there is virtually no audio multi-channel content, only soundtracks for film and television.
