"Ratting", or more universally known as "teasing", is the act of backcombing one's hair to make the hair appear larger, giving the roots more of a boost. Said to be popularized by first lady Jackie Kennedy in the 50's and 60's, a more modern day but completely radical version would be Amy Winehouse's 'beehive'.
