Rules can be applied to control things in a spreadsheet to affect the data you have. You can have validation rules to make sure the data you enter is more controlled. So you could do something like set a rule that limits what the highest value you can enter is. You can have conditional formatting rules to do things like change the colour of cells for different types of values. If a date is before today you could have it as a different colour than dates after today and have the spreadsheet do this automatically.
