It refers to an archaic method of removing stains and deposits from a plastered pool. A composite pad rather than actual sand paper was used to sand pools but they also left scratches and grooves in the plaster and did damage to the plaster. A much better way is to polish the pool with a 7 or 10 inch diamond pad on a grinder or converted weed eater. A variable speed grinder is best as the diamonds don't like it above 3000 RPM. I like the grinder as you can apply more force with it and get a baby butt smooth plaster and I have better control on the noses of steps and benches. Polishing a pool can greatly extend its service life since you are densifying the surface matrix, just as you would polishing a piece of marble or granite, making it more impermeable to water and chemical attack.
