Best Answer

Segmentation is the process of splitting up data in smaller fragments, to make smoother data delivery possible.

In communication, many layers exist in the process, from transmitting and receiving. The sender segments the data, and sends it through the communication channel to the receiver, who reassembles the fragmented data.

Usually, the data that has to be transmitted is very large. This cannot be sent in one piece, as there is a lot of disturbance in the channel and if it gets corrupted, the whole data has to be resent. And a single transmission cannot keep the channel busy for a long period or time. Therefore, this data is split in small segments and then sent independently through the channel. On failure, only that particular segment is resent.
