A stud can mean either:
1. A male selected to be used for breeding purposes. For example, a racing stallion would be made a "stud" so that he could pass his good genes on , and make more good racehorses.
2. A wall brace. Basically a horizontal board placed between to vertical ones for added support. A stud is a vertical support member of a wall, usually a 2x4 piece of lumber, around 8 feet in length (it is often shortened by about 3 inches to make a total of 8 feet when added to the thickness of the floor plate and sill plate, which are also 2x4s).
