It's just one of the humorous comments it displays. Herobrine is a minecraft 'urban legend' of sorts. Mojang is just playing into that myth and saying he was real, but they removed him, even though he never existed.

HeroBrine is not a real mob or character in minecraft vanilla (unmodded/mod-free). There have been many stories about Herobrine, but it is just a ghost story. It is possible you saw a block on the side of your screen, or a bug in the game. Notch has included "Removed Herobrine" In several updates now, but it was just a joke. Happy playing! :)
Simply login in launcher screen(need premium) and you can play. enjoy!
Minecraft should update automatically, but if you have the launcher, on the login screen you can press options, then force update.
Just download the new client at the Minecraft home page, or click the link on the main screen when Minecraft is opened
go to minecraft launcher>press options> press force update> press done> press the launch button.
Check if your minecraft.jar is still there. If it isn't, open the minecraft launcher, press 'Options' and click 'Force Update'. Now you're ready to play.
If you have not yet received the update screen asking if you'd like to update, simply log into Minecraft, and the screen should appear immediately. Click "Yes" and your client will update to 1.3.1. If you have received the update screen but chose no and now changed your mind, all you need to do is click the "Options" button on the launcher before you log in, then click "Force update". The button will change to "Will force!" and you can then log in and wait for the client to update!
