The Bible has about 50 or so references to growing. Many of these are simply referring to growth of plants. Jesus used this meaning four times in his teaching to illustrate something. "Consider the lilies of the field how they grow" (Matthew 6:28). It is also applied people 'growing up' or to something increasing such as:
16The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.
In 2Peter 3:18 below, the word is also used an an analogy for growth in the Christian life. This shows that Christians are never meant to be static but always increasing in knowledge and in practical following of their master.
18But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
