A:Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430) introduced the notion of original sin to the western half of the Christian Church, although it was never accepted in the Greek-speaking east and has been largely abandoned by many of the Protestant Churches. He said that original sin resulted directly from the disobedience of Adam and Eve, and believed that it could only be removed by baptism, so without baptism, souls could not go to heaven.

Over the centuries, original sin has been one of the principal justifications for infant baptism, since those who have been baptised were said to be free of original sin and thus able to enter heaven if they are not guilty of unrepented mortal sins. Until recently, the Roman Catholic position was that unbaptised infants go to a place or state known as limbo, prior to their eventual acceptance into heaven. It has been proposed that belief in limbo be dropped, and that unbaptised infants go straight to heaven, a revision that is currently being investigated.

With the gradual acceptance by the Church of the science of evolution, it is steadily moving away from a literal understanding of Adam and Eve as the first two humans, living just a few thousand years ago. Cardinal George Pell recently stated that the story of Adam and Eve is a myth, describing it as a religious story told for religious purposes. Without their existence, it will be hard to sustain the belief that Christians are born with original sin as a consequence of the sin of Adam and Eve, or that without baptism all are condemned to hell. It is too early to predict that the Church will soon abandon the doctrine of original sin, yet Adam and Eve can no longer be blamed for original sin that Christian tradition said that we all bear.

Roman Catholic AnswerThe Catholic Church has always taught, and will always teach that the Act of Sin committed by our first parents (Adam and Eve) is known as Original Sin and has been transmitted to each of us.

"Our First Parents in Paradise sinned grievously through transgression of the Divine probationary commandment." This is De fide which is the highest grade of theological certainty. Through this original sin "Our First Parents lost sanctifying grace and provoked the anger and indignation of God. De Fide. Due to this sin, our First Parents became subject to death and to the dominion of the devil. (De fide.) Adam's sin is transmitted to his posterity, not by imitation, but by descent (De Fide), by natural generation (De Fide).

In the state of original sin man is deprived of sanctifying grace and all that this implies, as well as of the preternatural gifts of integrity. (De Fide in regard to Sanctifying Grace and the Donum Immortalitatis.

Finally, Souls who depart this life in the state of original sin are excluded from the Beatific Vision of God. (De Fide).

Why does the Catholic church not teach Catholics about being saved?

The Catholic Church does teach Catholics about being saved. To be saved, one must be in a state of grace, free from "mortal" sin (which cuts off one's friendship with God). The Catholic Church teaches that once you have been saved, you can lose your salvation by falling into a state of mortal sin, but also that even mortal sin can be forgiven, and salvation can be restored.

What does St. Paul teach about original sin?

The apostle Paul taught much about sin, but he was really too early to be a source of information about original sin. Original sin is concept developed by Augustine of Hippo in the fourth century. The concept is strongly held to in the Catholic Church, but was never adopted by the Orthodox Churches, and is largely considered of little or no relevance in the Protestant Churches.

Why do some Christians believe original sin still has implications for us today?

AnswerBy and large, people grow up believing the doctrines of the church that their parents send them to. It is hard to change. Some Christian churches still teach the doctrine of original sin. The Catholic Church holds that because of original sin, those infant children of Christian parents, who die before baptism, can not go to heaven but must go to a place or state called limbo. The Catholic Church is currently considering removing the doctrine of limbo from its teachings, but this takes time.

Is original sin a state or an act?

According to the Catholic Church and, to a lesser extent, some Protestant Churches, original sin is a state resulting from the actions of Adam and Eve but washed away by baptism. It was St Augustine of Hippo who developed the concept of original sin, and it was never accepted bythe Orthodox Church or the Churches of the East. The conditional acceptance by the Catholic Church of the science of evolution, will in future result in some tension with the concept of original sin, and may require some adaptation. Already, the Church appears to be moving in the direction of abandoning the concept of limbo, a place where unbaptised babies go, because they are still in a state of original sin.
