in mandarin the Chinese word for panda is xiong Mao. and of course it beens panda. (pronounced shiong maw) 熊猫 xiong(2) Mao(1) is the correct phrase. Use your internet search tool to search for the keywords 'panda' and 'etymology', difficult to reproduce here due to copyright issues.

Panda is English not Chinese, in Chinese panda is spoken as 熊猫 xiongmao 熊 xiong means bear 猫 mao means cat So that's like maybe a bear that looks like a cat? Perhaps that's just my guess at it. Hope this helps.
